Creative Challenge 14
Title:
Exploring and Creating Patterns
Artform:
Visual Arts - Exploring Pattern
Challenge:
This activity is about exploring and creating your own exciting, visually pleasing patterns, using interesting objects that you already have at home. To build on these ideas, you can also research the work of visual artists, Adam Hillman or Andy Goldsworthy.
Resources:
Find a series of objects that you have lots of in your home e.g. Lego, counters, buttons, post it notes, paperclips, straws, cotton buds, pencils, stones, leaves etc.
Access to a camera and/or a device that allows you to download free collage apps (optional).
Getting started:
First, find and choose an object that you have lots of in your house with a variety of colours or sizes. Don’t forget to ask the grown up for permission to use the object for your ‘Discover at Home’ Project.
Next, working with your chosen object, find out what patterns you can make by placing them next to each other in repeated straight lines, circles, squares to build a pattern or ‘motif’. Explore what happens to your pattern when you limit/extend the number of colours that you use or work with the same coloured object but in different sizes.
When you are happy with the pattern or ‘motif’ that you have made, think how you can make it bigger by repeating it, rotating it or reflecting it.
Finally, share your pattern and motif making. You can do this by showing someone in your family the original work. If you have access to a camera, you could photograph it to share with a wider audience, as well as having a record of each pattern that you make for yourself.

Find out:
Choose one artist to research. Adam Hillman, (multi-media artist) if you are working with manmade objects such as Lego or paperclips or Andy Goldsworthy (land artist) if you prefer to work with more natural materials such as stones, twigs or leaves.
Remember that you can find out lots about artists by using ‘Google Images’ or searching ‘youtube’ for videos. You might also want to look at:

More Challenges:
If you have access to an electrical device which allows you to photograph your work and download apps, you can explore how you can develop your pattern using apps such as ‘layout’ or ‘incollage’.
